Day One: Security and Privacy
On day one, your priorities are security and privacy. Change the locks or rekey them, and make sure your blinds or window coverings are installed, at least in bedrooms and bathrooms. If you have not booked blinds installation before your move, schedule it for the first week so you are not living without privacy for long.
Day Two: Appliances and Kitchen
If your appliances were delivered, make sure they are installed and working. Test the fridge, stove, dishwasher, and laundry pair. If any appliance was not installed correctly, contact your installer right away. A working kitchen makes the first week much easier.
Day Three: HVAC and Comfort
Test your heating and cooling systems. If you moved in during summer, run the AC to make sure it works. If during winter, test the furnace. If you need a new AC installation, book it early in the first week, as GTA contractors can be booked out one to two weeks during peak season.
Day Four: Smart Home and Connectivity
Set up your Wi-Fi router and test coverage throughout the home. If you have smart home devices like a video doorbell, smart thermostat, or security cameras, install them now while you still have easy access to walls and doorframes. This is also a good time to set up your smart TV and mount it on the wall.
Day Five: Utilities and Services
Confirm that all utilities are transferred to your name: electricity, gas, water, internet, and waste. Set up any recurring services like lawn care or snow removal if applicable. Update your address with your bank, employer, and any subscription services.
What Can Wait
Cosmetic updates like painting, replacing light fixtures, and landscaping can wait until you are settled. Focus on the functional setup first. Once your home is comfortable and secure, you can tackle the aesthetic improvements at your own pace.
